I guess the first thing that came to my mind, in the case of Elisha, is "be careful what you ask for". He asked for "a double share of your spirit" from Elijah, maybe or maybe not realizing what all that might entail. It reminds me of how we sometimes are envious of what others have, not really realizing what it might be like to walk in their shoes. In both passages I sense great devotion to the leaders on the part of their followers. You never know what will be asked of you once you start following, so maybe the lesson is to be careful who you follow and who you keep company with. As for the passage about Peter, James and John, and how they were terrified when they got to the mountain and Elijah and Moses appeared to them....um yeah...can you imagine taking a trip with someone and having two dead people show up? :) Seriously, it must have been quite a moment for those disciples to actually witness the moment when the "mantle" was passed to Jesus.
